Pay for a nationality application

You can pay the registration duty (the tax) to start a nationality application procedure at the Federal Public Service Finance.

You will be given a receipt of that payment. That document is to be added to your application.

There are three possible procedures to apply for Belgian nationality:

  • A declaration of acquisition (persons who are at least 18 years old)
  • Naturalisation (persons who are at least 18 years old)
  • Granting (persons under 18 years of age)

More information on the procedures can be found on the website of the Federal Public Service Justice.

  • How much is the registration duty for a nationality application?

You will have to pay a fixed amount of 150 euros to the FPS Finance for your nationality application.

Exception: the granting of Belgian nationality to minor children or the re-acquisition of Belgian nationality is free of charge.

Please note that the authority handling your case may, for all situations, apply additional costs for translations, stamp duty, photocopies of the deeds and supporting documents to be added.

  • When do I have to pay the registration duty?

The amount of 150 euros is to be paid before submitting the nationality application. Without that payment receipt (a 'discharge'), your application is incomplete and cannot be processed.

  • How can I pay the registration duty?

There are two ways to pay the registration duty for your nationality application.

    1. MyMinfin: the easiest and fastest way

    1. Sign in.
    2. In the ‘My payments and refunds’ section, click ‘Pay my nationality application’.
    3. Go through the steps and pay the amount (only Bancontact is possible with MyMinfin's payment module) (Dutch | French | German).

You will receive the payment receipt within 24 hours of payment in 'My Documents'.

Remark: the nationality application can only be paid for the person who signed in.

    2. A Legal Certainty Office

    1. Call the general number of the FPS Finance: +32 2 572 57 57 (you will then be transferred to the competent office) or send an e-mail to the competent office.
    2. The office will explain how to pay (account number and details to be mentioned as communication).

After receipt of the payment, a proof of that payment will be sent to you.

How do I find the competent office?

You can look up the competent Legal Security Office in our Office Directory:

    1. Under ‘Household’, click on ‘Nationality’.
    2. Click the ‘SEARCH’ button.
    3. Enter your municipality and click ‘SEARCH’ again.

You will then receive the details of the Legal Security Office.

  • Is a refund possible?

No, it is not possible to obtain a partial or full refund even if you stop the procedure or if the nationality application is rejected.

  • How can I check if my online payment through MyMinfin was successful?

In MyMinfin, go to the ‘My payments’ tab and select ‘Manage my online payments’. If your online payment was successful, you will find it there.

You will find the payment receipt within 24 hours of payment in the 'My Documents' tab.

You can also use the ‘Manage my online payments’ tab to ask a question about your payment.
